I rarely let a day pass without making some sort of veggie smoothie. They’re just so easy, healthy and very refreshing in the Texas heat! I drink them every day which is why I’m rounding up all of my favorite recipes so you can try yourself! Smoothies are a healthy way to pack a ton of fruits and vegetables into your diet in a delicious tasting way. You can definitely make smoothies without fruit, but even a small amount can really take the recipe to the next level. You can keep it low sugar by just using berries or add some pineapple, mango and banana if you like it sweet and want to taste the tropics. I like using frozen fruit in smoothies, but fresh also works.

I love using almond butter or half an avocado to add some healthy fats and make the smoothie creamy. Icy smoothies are never good, so nut butters are essential! I’m very loyal to almond milk, but my homemade walnut milk, coconut water or even regular water all work well. In general, you can make smoothies with milk or water, but my personal preference is non-dairy milk. There are so many ways to add vegetables to smoothies without even seeing or tasting them. If you don’t want to change the color, cauliflower is the way to go. Spinach is great for beginners since it’s mild, but kale, broccoli and zucchini are all staples in my recipes.

Can you make smoothies in advance? You can, but I generally recommend serving right after blending. If you want to prep ahead of time, you can blend it up, stick it in the fridge, then re-blend or shake well before serving in the morning. I like to blend for a good minute or so to ensure everything is totally creamy and smooth.

This is especially important if you’re using a regular blender instead of a high speed blender. Do you lose nutrients when you blend? All of the nutrients will be preserved when you blend, but keep in mind smoothies can contain a lot of sugar if you aren’t careful. I like to balance my recipes with a mix of carbs, fat and protein to keep a veggie smoothie healthy and balanced. Do you need to add ice? Using frozen fruit can take the place of ice and make the smoothie cold.
